Krystian Zimerman's shocking Disney Hall debut in Los Angeles

From the L.A. Times:

Poland's Krystian Zimerman, widely regarded as one of the finest pianists in the world, created a furor Sunday night in his debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall when he announced this would be his last performance in America because of the nation's military policies overseas.

Before playing the final work on his recital, Karol Szymanowski’s "Variations on a Polish Folk Theme," Zimerman sat silently at the piano for a moment, almost began to play, but then turned to the audience. In a quiet but angry voice that did not project well, he indicated that he could no longer play in a country whose military wants to control the whole world.

“Get your hands off of my country,” he said. He also made reference to the U.S. military detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

About 30 or 40 people in the audience walked out, some shouting obscenities. “Yes,” he answered, “some people when they hear the word military start marching.”

Others remained but booed or yelled for him to shut up and play the piano. But many more cheered. Zimerman responded by saying that America has far finer things to export than the military, and he thanked those who support democracy.

For the first half of the recital, Zimerman had played a Bach Partita and Beethoven’s last piano sonata, Opus 111, with firm determination. After intermission he made a last minute substitution, exchanging late Brahms works for a 1953 sonata by Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz. The Szymanowski variations, which closed the program, was played with an astonishing ferocity that brought nothing but tumultuous cheers. There was no encore.

The pianist was not available after the concert for further comment.

Zimerman has had problems in the United States in recent years. He travels with his own Steinway piano, which he has altered himself. But shortly after 9/11, the instrument was confiscated at JFK Airport when he landed in New York to give a recital at Carnegie Hall. Thinking the glue smelled funny, the TSA decided to take no chances and destroyed the instrument. Since then he has shipped his pianos in parts, which he reassembles by hand after he lands. He also drives the truck himself when he carries his instrument from city to city over land, as he did after playing a recital in Berkeley on Friday.

Lunch with the FT: David Hockney

FT.COM: David Hockney does not do restaurants. “Even before they banned smoking,” he says, puffing pointedly on a Camel cigarette, “I had stopped going. Once you’re deaf, you’re not too keen on a crowded room – it all sounds like one big bang.”

(...)

He has drawn recent portraits with computer software, using a Wacom graphic tablet and tablet pen, producing inkjet prints that can be physically reworked by hand; these are the subject of next month’s London show Drawing Inside a Printing Machine. One depicting Celia’s granddaughters Lola, Tilly and Isabella – made while the girls watched a DVD on a baby-white chaise longue – has the snapshot spontaneity of a photograph but the fluid lines, a composition interrogating their relationship, and a nonchalant loveliness, characteristic of Hockney’s best portraits.

Beyond Copenhagen's Lakes

ASMALLWORLD.NET: For centuries, the man-made lakes along the Danish capital's west side prevented invaders from penetrating the city's centre. These days, however, the enormous basins seem to intimidate most travellers from leaving it. Ensconced in downtown hotels and seduced by central Copenhagen's throwback charms–Renaissance castles, the Tivoli Gardens, the Little Mermaid statue–foreign visitors rarely venture across the water into the hip and fast-developing neighbourhood beyond, Nørrebro.

Atom™ "Liedgut"

From a contemporary point of view, Atom™’s “Liedgut” may be considered a romantic work. While researching his own past, Atom™ found himself in the austro-german time, space, thinking and feeling. Between Nietzsche, Helmholtz, Schubert and many other guidelines, Atom™ absorbed a universe striving for clarity and simplicity, where science and irrationality, ornament and mathematic purity were the key elements of a (still) oscillating social and mental order. “Liedgut” therefore oscillates between those poles: scientific exercises on Schubert chord progressions, digital waltzes and romantic lyrics. This research consistently lead him to the post-romantic works of Oskar Sala, Kraftwerk and others, who could be seen as direct heirs of the romantic movement. Upon completition of the album Florian Schneider, former member of Kraftwerk, contributed a spoken epilogue, commenting the leitmotiv of “Liedgut” in the track called “Weißes Rauschen” (“White Noise”). For Atom™ the phenomenon of “white noise” perfectly served as an analogue expression of the romantic dualism: scientificly defined on the one hand, it is described in a poetic manner, seeking for a more profound meaning on the other. “Wellen und Felder” (“waves and fields”), which directly connects to “Weißes Rauschen”, similarly refers to both scientific models and philosophic/poetic ideas. Consequently Atom™’s research does not stop here thus managing to convey “Liedgut” into the present. Both form and content appear to be explicitly new and contemporary, yet “ex-temporary” at the same time.

Martin L. Gore: Lays

This is a de-luxe edition featuring for the first time ever in the form of a book the virtually complete lyrics written between 1981 and 2005 by MARTIN GORE for British band DEPECHE MODE. The 87 songs -- picked from DM's past 11 studio albums and myriad B sides -- span two and a half decades, and are gathered together in one volume along with their translation in French. The translation, which appears opposite each original lyric, has been painstakingly prepared by French DM aficionado JUGURTHA HARCHAOUI. The latter put the whole thing together over a several-year period with Martin Gore's blessing. Legendary German artist KLAUS VOORMANN contributed half-a-dozen original illustrations made specifically for the book. The editor also received help from world-renowned Dutch photographer ANTON CORBIJN, who provided the rare black-and-white portrait adorning the cover. ~ The band's greatest classics enjoyed such massive commercial success over the decades, it is easy to forget the masterful language, the timelessness and, quite often, the dry wit that characterize them. The translator annotated the French version with an unstinting eye for detail and rock history, allowing us to connect Gore's unique voice as a British songsmith with the American blues-and-rock tradition that informs those songs. ~ The 87-song retrospective is compiled into one lavish volume, more akin to a fine vintage poetry book than a typical rock coffee-table tome. Foreword by rock journalist Gerard Bar-David (Rolling Stone France, Best) who de facto acted as France's DM expert ever since their debut back in 1981. Translation by Jugurtha Harchaoui. ~ This rare, limited-edition item is a must-own for not only DM fans around the world but also any book lovers.

I think of Martin as part of that lineage that started with Roxy Music and T.Rex. Glamour and romance wrapped up in great tunes. Some of his records stand up alongside the great British singles. --Johnny Marr (The Smiths, Modest Mouse, The Cribs) When I wait for the lights to go down, carnal desire strikes; the devil sits on my shoulder and I stare over the edge. Martin Gore shows that words often offer nothing but complications and that the answers lie within… Martin becomes my friend when everyone's gone to bed.---Stefan Olsdal (Placebo, Hotel Persona) Martin Gore's lyrics are cool. --Nick Cave
